Apiezon PFPE 501 Vacuum Grease, Low Vapor Pressure, High Vacuum Grease

PFPE 501 Grease is now NSF H1 approved, high quality grease is a sealant and lubricant that is safe to use with food research and manufacturing machinary, such as:

  • Vacuum Pumps
  • Mixers
  • Conveyor Belts
  • Short path distillation equipment
  • and other associated applications

The Apiezon PFPE501 family of high vacuum greases are known around the world for their high quality, consistency and excellent compatibility for high vacuum applications. The new Apiezon range of high vacuum grease delivers the quality and reliability synonymous with the Apiezon brand.

Apiezon PFPE 501 is a chemically inert, high temperature and extreme pressure lubricant. With an upper operating temperature of 250 degrees Celsius and vapor pressure of 1.3 x 10-12 at 25 degrees Celsius, it is robust, versatile and can be used for sealing and lubricating under the most extreme operating conditions. This includes environments where aggressive chemicals and strong oxidizing agents are regularly used.

Features:

  • Robust - Chemical inertness and oxidation stability make Apiezon PFPE 501 ideal under the most extreme operating conditions.
  • Safe and Reliable - Non-toxic, nonflammable and maintains lubricity and thermal stability up to 250 degrees Celsius.
  • Extends Service Life - Branched PFPE structure and double-density provides film-forming and superior load-carrying capability.
  • Versatile - Used in a wide range of applications including bearings, valves, gears, threads, o-rings and seals.

Compatibility:

Apiezon PFPE 501 is compatible with all types of material including plastics, metals, ceramics, polymers, elastomers, ethers, alcohols and hydrocarbons. PFPE 501 is compatible with all chemicals, corrosives and solvents except those with a perfluorinated base.

What is PFPE?

PFPE or Perfluoropolyether, is a long chain polymer which consists of carbon, oxygen and fluorine atoms. The molecular structure can be branched, linear, or a combination thereof depending on the desired physical properties.

The fluorine and oxygen atoms are very strongly bonded to the carbon atoms, and as a result they reject electron interactions with surrounding atoms. As no part of the molecule is available for a reaction to take place, it is extremely inert. This inertness provides excellent high temperature performance and makes PFPE extremely useful in the presence of highly reactive chemicals such as corrosives, acids and liquid oxygen.

The outer layer of non-reactive fluorine atoms means that adjacent molecules will easily slip by each other, allowing PFPE to form film layers across surfaces. This can be very useful in reducing friction and minimizing wear.

When under heavy load these linear molecules slip across each other forming a very thin barrier between the surfaces which is not beneficial for lubricant longevity. Heavily branched molecules cannot slip across each other as easily and will form thicker and longer-lasting barriers between surfaces.

This heavily branched structure does however bring disadvantages at lower temperatures. For example, the more rigid structure results in a higher pour point.

To ensure both wide temperature range and good lubricity under heavy load, a partially branched molecule will provide the necessary balance of physical properties, hence the reason a partially branched molecular structure was selected for PFPE 501.
