Agilent TwisTorr 304 Overview


The Agilent Instrument TwisTorr 304 FS Air Cooled is a Turbo Molecular pump with ISO 100 X3500-64060 for high and ultra-high vacuum applications. Agilent Technologies TwissTor 304 FS is a replacement for well known Varian TV 301 9698918M00 Air Cooled Turbo Pump. TwissTor 304 FS has new and Improved floating suspension bearings. Twisstor Drag stage technology create high compression rations for gases like Helium and Hydrogen to deliver high tolerance of forline pressure, permiting use of smaller backing pump.
TwisTorr 304 is able pump any type of non-corrosive gas or gas compound.


Air Cooled Agilent Technologies TwisTorr 304 FS pumping action is obtained through a high speed turbine (max. 60000 rpm) driven by a high-performance 3-phase electric motor. The TwisTorr 304 FS is free of contaminating agents and, therefore, is suitable for applications requiring a "clean" vacuum.


The Agilent Instrument Pump TwisTorr 304 FS X3500-64060 pump consists of a high frequency motor driving a turbine fitted with 8 bladed stages and 3 TwisTorr drag stages. The turbine rotates in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from the high vacuum flange end. The turbine is made of high-strength aluminium alloy, machined from a single block. The TwisTorr stages are in the form of three disks.

The TwisTor 304 FS turbine rotor is supported by permanently lubricated high precision ceramic ball bearings installed on the forevacuum side of the pump. The static blades of the stator are made of stainless steel. These are supported and accurately positioned by spacer rings. Varian TwisTorr 304 stators are in the form of selfpositioning machined disks. On each disk there are parallel spiral pumping channels designed to pump in centrifugal direction on one side and in centripetal direction on the other side. These are made of aluminium alloy. During normal operation, the motor is fed with a voltage of 54 Vac three-phase at 1010 Hz. To reduce losses during start-up to a minimum, the frequency increases according to a ramp with a higher initial voltage/frequency ratio.

We have invested in state-of-the-art equipment including; complete line of decontamination, cleaning, drying, balancing, vibration analysis and software to minimize failures. Our in-house machine shop is capable of machining various components, prototypes and housing conversions as needed.

Repair Steps

  1. Full incoming inspection and run up time check, vibration check, drive inspection.
  2. Full disassembly, decontamination and cleaning.
  3. Pump is balanced utilizing state-of-the-art equipment from the world leader in equipment balancing and analysis to reduce noise and vibrations and extend bearings life.
  4. Assembly and replacement of all necessary parts such as shafts, bushings, bearings, sleeves, O-rings, gaskets, seals, wicks, etc. Only parts that meet or surpass OEM specifications are used to ensure dependable highest quality service and long pump life.
  5. Final test and leak check. The pump in fully assembled condition is checked for vacuum seal. Leak test to 1 x 10-9 Mbar l/s. Vibrations are analyzed and test data is digitally recorded.

Every pump and instrument is extensively tested for 48 hours. During our final tests, we monitor total pressure, temperature, vibration and noise level utilizing newest testing technologies and techniques specified by OEM.
