Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) oils consist solely of carbon (C), fluorine (F), and oxygen (O) atoms. The carbon–oxygen (C–O) and carbon–fluorine (C–F) bonds within the structure are extremely stable, rendering PFPE oils virtually inert to chemical and oxidative agents.
PFPEs do not undergo polymerization when exposed to high-energy radiation.
They are typically used when handling highly oxidative gases such as oxygen, ozone, or nitrogen oxides, as well as highly reactive substances like halogens and hydrogen halides. However, PFPEs are not entirely inert to Lewis acids—such as boron trifluoride (BF₃) or aluminum trichloride (AlCl₃)—and chemical reactions may occur at temperatures above approximately 150 °C (302 °F).
Caution: When decomposed, perfluoropolyethers can release toxic and corrosive gases such as hydrogen fluoride (HF) and carbonyl difluoride (COF₂), among others. For this reason, open flames must be strictly avoided in areas where PFPE is used. Smoking is also prohibited in workspaces where PFPE is present.
The LVO420 oil is being used with Leybold E + DK, RUVAC, DRYVAC, ECODRY Plus, and LEYVAC systems. Registered by NSF as H1, HX-1, H2, and HX-2.
